Maersk Buying Hamburg Süd

Maersk Buying Hamburg Süd

Danish shipping giant Maersk Line said that it will purchase Hamburg Süd of Germany's Oetker Group for EUR 3.7 billion (USD 4 billion). The deal has just been greenlit by the boards of both companies.

The US Department of Justice and the EU Commission approved the proposed deal.

Maersk expects to finalize the acquisition at the end of 2017. Until it does, the 2 companies will keep operating independently.

The deal should generate annual synergies of around USD 350-400 million from 2019. “The acquisition is cementing our position as the largest and leading carrier in container shipping, and it will provide great opportunities for the employees of both companies,” Søren Skou, the Maersk CEO, said.

The combined fleet of 743 container vessels will bring the total container capacity for Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd up to 3.9 million TEU and a global capacity share of 18.7%.
