New Perspective for Western Europe and East Asia Trade

New Perspective for Western Europe and East Asia Trade

Due to the last decades climate change the Northeast Passage becomes more available. The ice is melting and ships can go through without icebreakers assistance. Unexpectedly, it would be much more faster to carry cargo comparing to the shipping through Suez Canal, as it is being sailed through be around 17000 vessels annually when only 40 ships are heading north each year. The Northeast Passage shortens the route by 25-37%. Each year there more and more ships were noticed choosing this way during 2011-2016. The first ship to go through the arctic was Cosco's Yong Sheng in 2013, having arrived to Rotterdam in 9 days after departure from Shanghai. So far the only thing preventing the Passage from worldwide usage is a shallow bathymetry, which does not allow megaships going through, only vessels with 13 m depth with maximum cargo capacity of 4500 TEUs can use it for now, but Arctic route attracts more shippers to use it, and therefore more investment to come to fix it.

Crowley and Puerto Rico recovering After Maria Hurricane

Crowley and Puerto Rico recovering After Maria Hurricane

Almost seven weeks passed after Maria hit but some are yet to feel the relief and recovery. With assistance of American Maritime Partnership there were additional vessels included into the Land-San Juan route to deliver more relief cargo to the island. 25 vessels more, and among them are container ships, RoRo and LoLo barges, offshore supply vessels. As the trade volume raised, domestic Puerto Rico shipping companies started adding additional ports of discharge to minimize the transit time. 53' containers were added to the routing and as it was reported on Nov 16th, by that moment the island has already accepted more than 36k containers of commercial and aid cargo.
