MEPs Calling for Ban of Heavy Fuel Oil in Arctic

MEPs Calling for Ban of Heavy Fuel Oil in Arctic

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are urging the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to ban the highly polluting heavy fuel oil (HFO) from use in Arctic waters.

HFO enjoys widespread use in shipping because it is a cheap waste product of the oil refining process. It is the dirtiest fuel on the marine fuel market. It creates pollutants which harm human health and a spill is almost impossible to clean up.

European Federation for Transport and Environment stated: “We welcome the parliament’s clear call for a ban on the use of heavy fuel oil by ships in the Arctic. This vote should be a clear signal for EU member states to put HFO on the agenda for the next meeting of IMO’s environment committee in July. This is an important opportunity to start formal discussions on the risks related to using HFO in the Arctic.”

Shipping operations are on the rise in the Arctic due to previously frozen routes now being accessible. HFO has been banned from Antarctic waters.
