According to a recent report by the Environmental Defense Fund, South Africa has the potential to become a major supplier of zero carbon fuels. The key factors identified in the report are the country's large renewable energy sources, geographical position, and economic development.

“Our study shows that South Africa has an abundance of renewable energy potential. It is enough to supply the country’s domestic electrical demand as well as the production of zero carbon fuels to supply commercial vessels refueling in its international ports,” Aoife O’Leary, EDF's International Climate director, said.

The production of green hydrogen-derived fuels can help in achieving decarbonization goals, which will in turn open new export markets and create jobs. 

South Africa’s Hydrogen Society Roadmap aims to integrate hydrogen into the economy by maximizing the country’s natural resource and renewable energy opportunities.
