Shell and Carnival performed France's first-ever ship-to to ship LNG bunkering. The operation was carried out in the port of Marseille Fos on the cruise ship Costa Smeralda.

The bunkering was completed on May 4 through Anthony Veder’s converted LNG bunkering vessel Coral Methane.

Cruise leader Carnival is among the many companies embracing LNG as an alternative to traditional marine fuels.

German engine builder MAN Energy Solutions is partnering with Japanese shipbuilder Imabari Shipbuilding on the development of a vessel powered by ammonia.

The cooperation will serve as the basis for developing the vessel design including the ammonia storage tank, fuel supply system and a range of systems for the main engine. The project should help the shipping industry's major goal of reducing emissions. Hydrogen and ammonia are seen as potential zero-emission fuels of the future.
“The potential of ammonia as a fuel for two-stroke engine propulsion is huge as it will bring fulfillment of emission regulations. The technology is here, we are ready when the marine market is ready. When the production of green methanol, ammonia, LNG and biofuels can meet the quantities required in the maritime industry, we can deliver the engine,” MAN Energy Solutions said in a white paper.
The company believes that engines running on LPG could eventually be converted to ammonia-powered engines.
