The USA and Canada are phasing out the use of heavy fuel oil

The USA and Canada are phasing out the use of heavy fuel oil

US, Canada have started the process of reducing usage of heavy fuel oil (HFO) from the vessels operating in Arctic waters to save the region from the dirtiest marine fuel. HFO creates threats from spills and black carbon emissions hence its already banned in Antarctica and Svalbard (Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean). Currently 44% of vessels working in Arctic are using this HFO. During the next meeting of International Maritime Organization in July 2017, the US and Canada will be offering a plan of taking the heavy fuel oil out of the shipping industry.

Panama Canal Welcomes 500th Neopanamax vessel

Panama Canal Welcomes 500th Neopanamax vessel

Six months after the inauguration of the Expanded Panama Canal, the waterway reported its 500th transit of a Neopanamax ship.

The YM Unity, a containership owned by Greek-based Navios Maritime Partners and bulit by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries, is travelling from Asia to the US. It made a stop at Colon Container Terminal.

The ACP (Panama Canal Authority) stated, “Its transit marks a significant milestone for the Expanded Canal, which is experiencing a steady flow of traffic including containerships, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) vessels, dry bulk carriers, vehicle carriers, crude product tankers and liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels.”

According to the ACP, a number of major liners have rerouted their service to the canal because of the time savings which the expanded waterway provides.
