The USA and Canada are phasing out the use of heavy fuel oilThe USA and Canada are phasing out the use of heavy fuel oil US, Canada have started the process of reducing usage of heavy fuel oil (HFO) from the vessels operating in Arctic waters to save the region from the dirtiest marine fuel. HFO creates threats from spills and black carbon emissions hence its already banned in Antarctica and Svalbard (Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean). Currently 44% of vessels working in Arctic are using this HFO. During the next meeting of International Maritime Organization in July 2017, the US and Canada will be offering a plan of taking the heavy fuel oil out of the shipping industry.

Volumes increase at Georgia's Savannah PorThe Georgia Port Authority had a 6.5% increase of container traffic in November. It was caused by the export market growth and an intense holiday season. In November 2016 the Savannah port handled over 167 000 containers, which is 10 000 more comparing with November 2015. Last month export loads increased by 10 % and import grew by 12%. As per the Georgia Port Authority, Savannah Port reached it busiest October ever moving 251 566 TEUs containers. From September till November the Georgia Port Authority handled around 920 000 TEUs in total. 2016-12-21
The Most Environmentally Friendly PortLos Angeles port made one more step towards zero emission operation and was awarded 2 government grants for implementing its aim to become a first non-polluting port. USD 5.8 million grant from California Energy Commission (CEC) will be spent on new equipment for moving cargo. More than 100 drayage trucks will upgraded with up-to-date smart technologies to reduce pollution. It's going to take 3 years to update all the equipment, but first results are expected already in 2018.

Panama Canal Welcomes 500th Neopanamax vesselPanama Canal Welcomes 500th Neopanamax vessel Six months after the inauguration of the Expanded Panama Canal, the waterway reported its 500th transit of a Neopanamax ship. The YM Unity, a containership owned by Greek-based Navios Maritime Partners and bulit by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries, is travelling from Asia to the US. It made a stop at Colon Container Terminal. The ACP (Panama Canal Authority) stated, “Its transit marks a significant milestone for the Expanded Canal, which is experiencing a steady flow of traffic including containerships, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) vessels, dry bulk carriers, vehicle carriers, crude product tankers and liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels.” According to the ACP, a number of major liners have rerouted their service to the canal because of the time savings which the expanded waterway provides. |
