French BNP Paribas and Swiss Credit Suisse have signed the Poseidon Principles, a global framework for responsible ship financing which incentivizes decarbonization. They are the 15th and 16th organizations to have joined.

The Poseidon Principles are the first-ever sector-specific, self-governing climate agreement between financial institutions. They put forth guidelines for determining and reporting whether a financial institution's portfolios are in line with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) climate goals. The target is to reduce the shipping industry's annual greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by the year 2050, with the eventual goal being zero emissions. 
“The decision of BNP Paribas and Credit Suisse to sign on to the Poseidon Principles represents another milestone for responsible ship finance. We welcome their leadership and we encourage other serious financial institutions to join them in serving global seaborne trade in a sustainable manner,“ Michael Parker, Chair of the Poseidon Principles Association, stated.

The Poseidon Principles are expected to evolve over time and to encompass a range of issues where the financial and maritime sectors can come together to benefit society.
