Bayonne Port Gets Ready for Grand Ships

Bayonne Port Gets Ready for Grand Ships

The reconstruction of Bayonne Bridge is finishing before planned time and less more than a month mega ships will be able to enter the harbor and access both New York and New Jersey terminals. The $1.6 million project is to raise bridge's clearance height from 151 feet to 215. Until now only 8-9 000 TEUs vessels can enter the terminals, but after the project completed, ultra-large containerships up to 18 000 TEUs will start operation in this area. By 2019 the bridge have to be completed with it's full width.

Ship Software Will Restrict Air Pollution

Ship Software Will Restrict Air Pollution

Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has announced the development of a new software which limits emissions of NOx particles and black smoke from vessels. The system is expected to be implemented in new marine engines toward the end of 2017.

North America instituted a requirement in 2016 to reduce emissions from large diesel engines on new vessels by 75 percent. Some regions of Europe will follow suit in a few years.

MAN Diesel & Turbo participated in the project. The company's Head of Emission Control stated: “EGR technology is one way of reducing NOx emissions. However, the regulator for the EGR technology meant that black smoke was created in connection with the rapid acceleration of a ship, which is undesirable and can damage the engine. The black smoke could be removed by maneuvering ships differently, but we wanted to maintain the current sailing properties and solve the problem in a different way instead.”

Linköping University also took part in the cooperation. Ph.D. student Kræn Vodder Nielsen said: “I found out that the academic methods for development of the control of a marine engine with EGR technology at that time were too complex. Therefore, it quickly became clear to me that I had to develop a simple model that includes only the critical part of the system that we wanted to improve. From there, we developed a new control that coordinates the recirculation and fuel injection without requiring too much tuning of other parts of the system. Initially, I will go out and install it on the ships, but in the long term the plan is that I will write a guide so that shipbuilders and crews can fine-tune the system themselves.”

New terminals will handle up to 100 million TEU of cargo per year which  is more than the largest Mexican ports of Manzanillo and Cardenas.

The  working areas include the turning basin and the access channel. Over 13 million cbm of the area will be removed and recovered.

The new project is going to be started this summer and completed in March 2018.

Maersk Buying Hamburg Süd

Maersk Buying Hamburg Süd

Danish shipping giant Maersk Line said that it will purchase Hamburg Süd of Germany's Oetker Group for EUR 3.7 billion (USD 4 billion). The deal has just been greenlit by the boards of both companies.

The US Department of Justice and the EU Commission approved the proposed deal.

Maersk expects to finalize the acquisition at the end of 2017. Until it does, the 2 companies will keep operating independently.

The deal should generate annual synergies of around USD 350-400 million from 2019. “The acquisition is cementing our position as the largest and leading carrier in container shipping, and it will provide great opportunities for the employees of both companies,” Søren Skou, the Maersk CEO, said.

The combined fleet of 743 container vessels will bring the total container capacity for Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd up to 3.9 million TEU and a global capacity share of 18.7%.
