MEPs Calling for Ban of Heavy Fuel Oil in ArcticMEPs Calling for Ban of Heavy Fuel Oil in Arctic Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are urging the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to ban the highly polluting heavy fuel oil (HFO) from use in Arctic waters. HFO enjoys widespread use in shipping because it is a cheap waste product of the oil refining process. It is the dirtiest fuel on the marine fuel market. It creates pollutants which harm human health and a spill is almost impossible to clean up.
Shipping operations are on the rise in the Arctic due to previously frozen routes now being accessible. HFO has been banned from Antarctic waters. 2017-04-07
