Crowley company rearranges its structure

Crowley Maritime Corp. has started overhauling its business segments directing the focus to government-related business and fuel distribution along with vessel operations.  In the nearest months company said its performance will be divided into 3 main sectors: Crowley Shipping, Crowley Solutions and Crowley Fuels.  Moreover, its liner shipping and logistics activity will keep moving towards one general union - Crowley Logistics and will become as separate company's division during the next couple of years. 

​New Fully Automated​ Container Terminal Started Operation

The biggest in the world automated terminal for containers is China’s Shanghai ​port launched trial operation on December 10th.  ​A deep water unmanned terminal is located in Hangzhou Bay and covers area of ​2,23 million square meters  with the berth of ​2,350 meters  long. ​Right now the terminal can handle mega-ships without human assistance and once full operation approved, more than 4 million TEUs will be handled here annually, though Ports authorities aiming at 6 million TEUs as a final goal. The automatic system was invested with USD 2.1 billion so far and the project has to be completed by 2020. 

CMA CGM acquires Mercosul 

French shipper CMA CGM has acquired Brazilian container shipping line Mercosul Line from Maersk for an undisclosed sum.

Maersk sold Mercosul in order to purchase Hamburg Süd. Otherwise it would not have received approval from Brazil's regulators who had to ensure that the country's shipping sector remains competitive. Hamburg Süd has a major subsidiary in Brazil and keeping Mercosul would have increased Maersk's share of the market to 80 percent. 

“Mercosul is a highly respected and well-run company with an excellent fleet and customer value proposition. It has been a valued brand in our portfolio and we wish the company and its dedicated people the best in the future,” Søren Toft, Maersk's Chief Operating Officer, said.

The acquisition “...allows CMA CGM to strengthen its service offering in Brazil, and more broadly in South America...” according to CMA CGM.

The Panama Canal will increase the number of daily booking slots for vessels from six to seven in December 2017.

The Panama Canal embraces additional capacity and offers 7 additional slots to 23 slots available each day for transit. As per Panama Canal Administrator such increase  is the result of streamlined use of resources and effective collaboration. The additional slot is now available for ships transiting northbound, from the Pacific to Atlantic Ocean. The canal’s daily performance far exceeds the three to four daily transits originally expected. One of the  main aims of the Panama Canal is to continue to explore ways to expand its capacity offering  8  reservation slots by the end of the first quarter of 2018.
