Record Cargo Volume For Panama Canal

The Panama Canal ended its 2018 fiscal year with a record tonnage of 442.1 million Panama Canal tons (PC/UMS), which is  a 9.5 percent increase compared to the 403.8 million PC/UMS tons of the previous year.

The facility saw a transit increase of LPG and LNG carriers, containerships, chemical tankers and vehicle carriers.

“The Panama Canal continues to exceed our expectations, reinforcing every day the importance of the waterway’s expansion and its impact on global maritime trade,” Jorge L. Quijano, Panama Canal Administrator, stated.

The main users were USA. China, Mexico, Chile and Japan, with roughly 63 percent of the total cargo entering or leaving USA.

First LNG Ship-to-Ship Bunkering For Shell

Royal Dutch Shell has performed its first ship-to-ship bunkering of LNG fuel. Cardissa, a specialized LNG bunker vessel, fueled the Sovcomflot  vessel Gagarin Prospect, the world’s first LNG-powered Aframax tanker, in the Port of Rotterdam.

It was the first operation under the 2017 LNG fuel supply agreement between Shell and Sovcomflot.

 “This exciting first for the Cardissa is a tangible example of Shell driving LNG as a cleaner burning and viable fuel for the shipping industry. It is highly appropriate that we celebrate this first with Sovcomflot and their first LNG powered tanker, which we also happen to charter,” Grahaeme Henderson, Shell Vice President of Shipping and Maritime, said.

Hueneme Port Is to Get Greener

US Hueneme port was granted USD 3 million by The California Air Resources Board (CARB) to fund its zero emission energy project. It's going to be completely new ship to shore equipment, which will be funded by ZANZEFF (Zero- and Near Zero- Emission Freight Facilities). Moreover, the terminal will get 2 brand new electric yard trucks and revision of infrastructure for handling equipment feasible on-dock.

Local port's authorities will spend USD 200 000, which will make it in total USD 3.2 million to upgrade the port.
