Additional Harbor Funding For JAXPORT

The US federal government has allocated USD 93 million for the next phase of deepening the Jacksonville shipping channel at Blount Island Marine Terminal.
The channel is being deepened from its current depth of 40 ft to 47 feet.

Upon the project's completion, the container terminal at Blount Island will be able to simultaneously accommodate two post-Panamax vessels. It is expected to be completed in 2023, with the funds coming from the federal government, the state of Florida, JAXPORT, and port tenant SSA Jacksonville. The 47-foot depth is crucial to the port's goal of bringing in more cargo aboard larger ships from across the world. JAXPORT’s Asian container trade has jumped 55 percent in the past five years.

“This is a significant win for Jacksonville and as I have said before, the continued support from our state and federal partners demonstrates the strength of JAXPORT’s future,” Lenny Curry, Mayor of Jacksonville, said.
