Germany

A car import from US to Germany is subject to import duty and VAT. As the Germany government rules say, the import duty is 10% and the import VAT is almost 15% of the value of the car. Yet there are a few ways that can actually enable you skip these charges. But that is only for the foreigners who are settling in Germany. Vintage cars and collector's cars require only a 7% duty.

As in other countries, you have to fill up a number of custom forms. The shipping company will help you get all these. If you are importing your car from US to Germany look for an international shipping company. The original US title will be handed over to the shipping company before the car sets sail. The US customs ask for the original US title. Shipping from US to Germany takes almost 20 days. Bremerhaven or Hamburg are the two places of Germany where the import can take place.

If you want to escape the duty, you have to prove that you are no longer a resident of US and you are establishing a new residence in Germany. To prove these points, you can produce documents of your termination of US employment, statement of sale of your US house etc.

The imported car must meet the specifications made by the Germany government regarding technical and environmental issues. The necessary documents for import include, passport, custom clearance, US export permit, proof of ownership, proof of liability insurance etc.
