Custom duty on car import to Turkey from the US

Turkey is a part of the European Union and thus there are little different regulations in Turkey for importing cars from countries that are not a part of the European Union or European Economic Area. If a non-Turkish national owns a residential permit with local Turkish police for more than a year, he/she can import a car duty free into Turkey from the US but only up to a maximum period of 180 days. The documents required in the proceedings will include original passport, residential permit, tariff insurance certificate and registration certificate of the car.

If a person owns a working permit in Turkey, he/she can import the car into Turkey depending on his residence permit and on a payment of a deposit (guarantee) to the Touring Service. If the residential permit of such a person expires, the person has to move out the car while he/she is bound to receive the deposit back from the touring service. The documents required in this case are almost the same as above along with the registered work permit.

For Turkish nationals, importing a car into Turkey from USA is comparatively easier. One car per family can be imported in such cases but the subject custom duty applies here too. The car being imported should be registered in the name of the person for a minimum of 6 months and not more than 3 years in the USA. The car necessarily has to be used and not brand new. The owner needs to get in touch with the Turkish Consulate/ Embassy to get the necessary documents and information before importing the car.
